The Hybrid Multi-Cloud dream becomes a reality

When we couldn't find the platform we needed to enable the next generation of payments (and other) tech, we set about building the dream platform from scratch.

Earlier this year, I met up with David Daniel and Martin Hopkins CFP from DANIEL. Their goals of true borderless banking, accelerating financial inclusion and the chance to build cutting-edge tech, appealed hugely to me and I was delighted to be offered the CTO role! So, I thought I’d give an update on some of the work we’ve been doing. Here’s a taster.

DANIEL's new technology changes the way we do global payments

For those of you who aren’t yet aware, DANIEL is a Fintech startup in London enabling truly borderless banking whilst accelerating financial inclusion, especially in the developing world.

Slow speeds and high fees—which affect the poorest the most—can be reduced to just a fraction of what they are today.

To build a truly global, future-proof company, we can’t be locked into any specific Cloud or data-centre vendor. Therefore our payments platform needs to be truly agnostic. We also knew we needed a platform that could be deployed anywhere in the world, while being super secure and highly available. We couldn't find one, so we’ve gone and built it from scratch — a proprietary platform that runs simultaneously in multiple Cloud vendors and traditional data centres, making us truly Hybrid Multi-Cloud!

Our new Hybrid Multi-Cloud platform is massively resilient. If a data-centre or Cloud vendor goes down, traffic is automatically switched to other working locations, with no loss of data, even for transactions in mid-process.

Regulators such as the FCA are understandably concerned about financial services companies (especially banks) being reliant on single Cloud vendors, usually referred to as concentration risk. The DANIEL team has proven that organisations can break out of the Cloud ‘vendor trap’ and become Hybrid Multi-Cloud. Hopefully we have shown the way in being able to build truly global platforms that eliminate concentration risk.

I’ve been itching to try out my ideas around Hybrid Multi-Cloud for nearly a decade and now, at DANIEL, at least some of my dreams have come true!
